Griseofulvin BP
Composition Each bolus contains Griseofulvin BP 2.5 g.
Pharmacology
Griseofulvin, a systemic antifungal agent, is effective against the common dermatophytes. Griseofulvin disrupts the mitotic spindle by interacting with the polymerized microtubules in susceptible dermatophytes. It inhibits the nucleic acid synthesis and the formation of hyphal cell wall. The result is distortion, irregular swelling, and spiral curling of the hyphae. Griseofulvin is fungistatic rather than fungicidal, except in young active cells. It is active against Microsporum, Epidermophyton and Trichophyton spp.
Indication
For the treatment of dermatophytosis / ringworm. It may also be used in mycotic mastitis.
Dosage & administration
Cattle & Horse: 1 bolus /250 kg body weight (10 mg/kg body weight) for 7 days for mild infection and 2-3 weeks In severe infection.
Dogs & cats: 10-30 mg/kg body weight/day.
